QUICK ANSWERS

Dentists with qualifications from outside the EU who do not qualify under a recognition or assessment route will generally need to pass it before applying for full registration. The right route depends on your qualification, registration history and circumstances, so confirm it with the Council.
What IELTS and OET scores are required?
Where a test is required: Academic IELTS 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, or OET Dentistry B in each of the four. Certificates generally need to be no more than two years old.

Before preparing for the Irish Dental Council exam, confirm that it is the correct registration route for you. The Dental Council has different routes for Irish graduates, certain EU-qualified dentists, dentists covered by mutual-recognition arrangements, applicants seeking assessment and dentists with refugee or temporary-protection status.

Why eligibility should be checked first

The exam is a registration requirement, not simply a professional development course. Applying under the wrong route can lead to unnecessary cost and delay. The Council recommends allowing about three months for the registration process and warns that incomplete applications or requests for additional information can cause delays.

Applicants should contact the Dental Council registration department if they are unsure whether their qualification should be assessed or whether another route applies.

Documents to prepare

The exact checklist depends on your route and circumstances. Commonly requested material can include a completed application form, passport copy, primary dental qualification, academic records, proof of language proficiency, professional-good-standing documents, work-history information, translations and the relevant fee.

Repeat candidates must provide an up-to-date letter of good standing, up-to-date work history and the repeat fee. The current examination notice should be checked for the precise instructions for the next sitting.

IELTS and OET requirements

The Dental Council’s current language page lists these minimum scores where an English test is required:

  • Academic IELTS: 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
  • OET Dentistry: B in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The Council may accept English-language evidence through a qualifying dentistry programme completed in English or through a specified period of registered practice in an English-speaking member state, subject to its assessment of the evidence.

IELTS and OET certificates must generally be no more than two years old when submitted for registration. The Council accepts paper-based and computer-based tests. It does not currently accept IELTS Online or OET@Home. Language proficiency requirements

Exam fee and registration costs

The current Dental Council fee page lists €1,500 for the non-EEA dentists’ examination and €750 for a repeat fee. It also lists €400 for a dentist registration application and €450 as the annual retention fee for dentists in 2026. Fees and online payments

These are separate from travel, accommodation, translations, English testing, document certification and immigration costs. Check the official fee page because amounts may change.

Refugee and temporary-protection pathway

Qualified dentists with current refugee or temporary-protection status in Ireland should review the separate Dental Council pathway. The Council states that dentists with refugee status in Ireland do not need to apply for the ordinary examination route to access the Register, although the registration process may include a period of adaptation or other requirements. Refugee or temporary-protection status

Application timing

The Council normally announces the application arrangements between November and December for the following year’s examination. In the 2026 process, applications were accepted during a specified week and available places were allocated using a random-selection system. The Council divided applicants into those established in Ireland and those outside Ireland, with a stated allocation of 80% and 20% respectively for that sitting.

Do not assume that a future sitting will use identical dates or allocation rules. Check the latest official notice before submitting your application.

Document checklist before submission

Create a digital and paper checklist. Confirm that names match across documents, translations are complete, good-standing letters are current, English results are valid and every required signature is present. Keep proof of delivery and copies of the application.
